Interview: Carbon Love
Hello Carbon Love! So great to speak with you today!
The pleasure is all mine!
What have you been working on lately?
We're putting the finishing touches on our second album, and we have a single from it coming out on 11/19! We're very excited to show the world the new direction we've taken our sound.
If you had an intro song in life, what would it be?
Everything I Am by Kanye (Ye) West - I must admit I do miss the old Kanye, and I love this song because its message can speak to anyone.
Do you have a song that gets you energized no matter what?
Definitely Electric Feel by MGMT - every time I hear it I go on an adventure for the very first time.
What is a lyric in a song that you think epitomizes great songwriting?
One line that has always stuck out to me is one of John Mayer's, and it's oddly blunt and simple: "I still keep your shampoo in my shower in case you want to wash your hair." I think the best lyrics are ones that don't just tell a story, but show it. This line builds a relatable image and echoes the sentiment of the whole song, which is still feeling like you're with someone.
How do you personally approach the songwriting process?
Most of my initial creativity is driven by picking good sounds for harmony, and then riffing a scratch melody over it. I think that's the reason that I'm so blown away by good lyrics - I often feel like I'm compromising my story and bending words to fit the melody in my head.
Do you have any advice for artists who are just starting to dip their toes into the songwriting world?
Study the greats! Sit there and tear a song to pieces until you understand exactly how it works, take your favorite ingredients, and add them to your creative arsenal.
Any projects coming up you want us to be on the lookout for?
We're going to do a live acoustic set of 3 of our songs at the Kitchen Studios in Dallas - stay tuned!
Please let everyone know where to find you and your music!
