Interview: Cobra Spell
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
My first interaction with the heavy side of music is when I discovered the existence of the band KISS. I got hugely obsessed by them, most certainly inspired by Gene Simmons I decided to start playing the bass. If I didn’t ge tinto music I most probably would have been a creative web developer since I have had studied it and had a career in this field in the past.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I enjoy dancing, doing make-up, dressing up, gymnastics, and a lot more!
How long has your band been around?
Cobra Spell was founded in the summer of 2019, so we have been around for almost 3 years so far. Though we just started being more seriously active.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
I live in Nieuw Vennep, The Netherlands. To be honest the place that I come from didn’t have any kind of effect on my influence since most of the music that inspires me comes from the USA.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
It was very spontaneous and random idea, it just sounded very cool. Cobra’s are cool animals! Haha. It truly didn’t have any particular reason, it just sounded awesome to me.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
My lifetimes most memorable shows are Wacken Open Air in Germany, Sweden Rock in Sweden, and Progresja in Poland.
What is your favourite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
My favourite venues are: Progresja in Poland, Baroeg in The Netherlands and Z7 in Switzerland.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
The only line-up I want to play is with the COBRA SPELL line-up!
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Someone who just got started: Don’t let yourself get influenced too much by negative energy. People will say a lot to bring you down, and the best you can do is to keep on going and follow your dreams. Also make sure to choose for that what makes YOU happy.
Myself: Keep doing what you do, you are doing fantastic!
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
Addicted To The Night, since this one is my favourite song instrumentally, it features a lot of musical elements in heavy/rock that I adore and besides that the lyrics were written by myself and my bassist Angelina. We had a blast writing it!
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
My favourite songs to play are Shake Me and Addicted To The Night, both are more up-tempo songs and I enjoy playing those! Certainly Shake Me since it has a nice sleazy tempo. Our most requested songs are Addicted To The Night and Poison Bite.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
All the compositions are firstly made by myself, usually, I do them at my own room with my little DIY home studio, I record my ideas straight away.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
My main goal is to bring back the 80s and fun into music. This is why the messages of the songs are surrounding partying, reckless love and having crazy & sleazy fun!
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
All bands sometimes have disagreements, therefore it’s important that everyone in the band is able to communicate and talk it out.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
100% COBRA SPELL for me. Currently writing some new music, and also working on booking shows for the future!
