Interview: Cory Singer
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
I have always been surrounded by music and grew up listening to artists such as Stevie Wonder, Journey, and Melissa Etheridge. I was always creative and loved being able to express myself through art, specifically music. If I hadn't gotten into music, I would pursue acting, which I still love to do as well.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
When I’m not playing music, I enjoy creating content and engaging with individuals as an autism advocate on TikTok. I also like to exercise! After losing 70 pounds years ago, staying on top of my fitness and nutrition keeps me disciplined in other areas of my life, including music. Lastly, when I have time, I also love to partake in theatre.
How long has your band been around?
In the past, I was a part of two bands, which never went anywhere, unfortunately. I have been working as a solo artist for over nine years.
Where are you based and how did that influence your music?
I am from New Jersey, and I grew up listening to artists from here as well such as Springsteen and Bon Jovi. Though, I usually write songs based on all my experiences in life.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
My name is Cory Singer, which is my birth-given name.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
The most memorable place that I’ve played shows at is The Stanhope House. I also once did a show where Vinnie Martel of Vanilla Fudge opened for me, which was awesome!
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
I don’t have a particular favorite, I just love being out and connecting with other people. Any chance I get to perform, I give it my all. My dream gig, however, is Madison Square Garden.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Pearl Jam, Glen Hansard, Ed Sheeran, Stevie Wonder, and Lady Gaga
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
To someone getting into music, I would tell them to always be original. Find your sound and run with it. As for my younger self, I would say be patient. There are going to be times where you will want to give up, but that's when you get better and grow.
If you could go back in time and give yourself advice, what would it be?
I would tell myself to not worry about what people think and to continue to be myself in everything that I do.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
Someone. I wrote that song based on my journey with autism and it connected with a lot of people. It was the first time I was raw and honest in my writing.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
Any of my original music is my favorite to play, yet I often get requests to play covers of songs when I perform!
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
I am always in a creative mindset, which expresses itself within my music. I am also always looking for inspiration. Sometimes a song comes to me when I least expect it, and I will have to write it down, no matter where I am.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
I’m a hopeless romantic, so I am honest and open in my music. In addition, I strive to be vulnerable with my personal insights about having autism to be able to educate.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
Since I’m a solo artist, I don’t have to deal with that frustration, fortunately.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
I am currently recording an album, and am putting a new song up for pre-order within the next couple of weeks! Overall, I have lots of new music in the works, and am hoping to drop many songs throughout this year!
