Interview: Derek Skelton
Hello Derek!
So lovely to speak with you today!
Tell us about your latest project!
- I’m actually working on finishing up a song with some other writers! I’m always writing and trying to create songs, not only for myself, but for other artists as well.
What is a dream venue for you to perform in?
- I think the Red Rocks Amphitheatre would be so cool to perform in! It’s such an amazing environment and beautiful place…I can only imagine what it would be like at night with thousands of lights illuminating the place.
What are five songs that would be on your most-played list?
- That’s tough, but I’d say these are the ones I listen to the most. Especially the first one!
1. Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls
2. These Days by Rascal Flatts
3. Anytime by Brian McKnight
4. Fast Car by Tracy Chapman
5. Over My Head by The Fray
Do you have a favorite ’90s jam?
- Oh man, I have so many! How is it even possible to pick just one? I guess if I had to pick one from the endless list of 90’s songs…I’d go with Water Runs Dry by Boyz II Men. That run at 1:44 in the song always gets me. Those guys are incredible!
What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
- It’s gotta be the soundtrack to O Brother, Where Art Though. There’s just such great songs on there. My favorites are definitely “Man Of Constant Sorrow,” which, if you don’t absolutely belt that song out when you hear it then somethings wrong with you. My second favorite on that soundtrack is “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues.” I could chill next to a bonfire with a bottle of whiskey all night to that song.
Favorite song to belt out in the car?
- Well, since “Iris” is my favorite song then it would definitely have to be that one! I’ll put on a full performance to that song.
How important do you think it is for artists to know and understand music history?
- Super important! You need to understand where the music started, where the influences came from, the creative processes that went behind them. It’s all stuff that artists should look into.
Please let everyone know where they can keep up with you and your music!
