Interview: Dina Renee
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
I have always loved music since my earliest memory. It was always the thing that brought me the most joy. I also love photography, doing hair and Makeup, and designing and styling wardrobe.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I made a Photoshoot spot for creatives. It’s called the Hollywood Pastel palace; you can book it on peerspace. I love to take photos of clients that come in. It’s been really fun.
How long has music been your career?
I started releasing music in 2015.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
I live in Hollywood. Every day something amazing could happen here that you would never expect that could change your life. I love being here for that reason. It influences my music because it makes me work harder for what I love to do.
Tell me about the best and worst shows you have played.
The best show I ever played also was the worst show because after I found out the booker of the venue said a lot of rude things about me to my manager. It was the biggest venue I’d ever played at and on my birthday too so I was a bit sad after that. I still call it my best show because I did my best and I had always wanted to perform at that venue in Hollywood.
Tell me about your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
I would love to play at Hotel Cafe I’ve still never played there. Right now my favorite venue is Molly Malones.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Britney Spears, bebe Rexha, Camila cabello, Ava max
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into music?
Don’t doubt yourself! You can do it!
If you could go back in time and give yourself advice, what would it be?
To not doubt myself so much and to not think one day I’d do this or that- to actually do it now. I never performed live in my hometown because so many people there didn’t understand me or my vision and made me feel like I wasn’t good enough. I sometimes really regret not leaving sooner.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
The new songs I wrote mean a lot to me because they have to do with breakups I’ve recently gone through which have been pretty painful. Putting it into song has been like therapy.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
People seem to always like “la la la” or “all in front of you”. My favorite to sing would always be my newest songs because it’s fresh for me.
What is the creative process for you, and what inspires you to write your music?
I am inspired everyday. I just sort of jot down random ideas or thoughts I have and then my co-writer and I brainstorm on what we want to write about and what I’m going through.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
I want to say things people are scared to admit or say. I’m an open book so I want to express that I’m fearless in my music and that I don’t care to make myself look vulnerable.
Do you ever have disagreements when collaborating and how do you get past them?
I think it’s all about listening to the other person but also standing your ground. I know when something is right and when something seems off and I never put anything out there I’m not 100 percent about.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
I would love to find a good producer for my next release. I want to release an ep next time
