Interview: Drive Through Hazy
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Bridget started learning the piano by the age of four…so she didn’t have much choice not to get into music! Joe on the other hand picked up the guitar in his teens as well as taught himself to produce.
We both can’t imagine a life without music...but I (Bridget) would have gone into drama instead! I love the stage! Joe is reluctant, and not telling me any other job apart from music!!!!
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
We love going to gigs and seeing live music! We get as much of a buzz from listening to others as we do when playing on stage! We love to be around fellow creatives!
How long has your band been around?
We officially started as ‘Drive Through Hazy’ in the late summer of 2021, however, Joe and I started working together around Christmas 2020!
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
Joe and I are both from Norwich originally, however, the band really took off in Nottingham! Nottingham is such a friendly and encouraging city, so it helped us feel comfortable in developing our sound. I feel we took some musical risks that we may have not taken if we didn’t feel so welcome!
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
I’d love to tell you, but this is for Joe and I to know ;)
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
Our first show was pretty memorable, we played Nottingham’s Rough Trade Venue. It is tiny!!! However, we managed to pack a whole crowd in and then caught Covid afterwards ;)
Our most memorable show was our Single launch for ‘Critter’ at Metronome, Nottingham. We had the stage to ourselves, and performed three of our tracks with amazing lighting, videography and special effects…we got a glimpse of being famous for 20 mins ;)
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
We are a little bias, having studied at Metronome, but it certainly was one of our favorite venues!!! We would love to play more festivals, especially in the evenings for an additional atmosphere!
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
MASSIVE ATTACK!!!! Supporting them would be a dream come true.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Having experience working in bands that were not enjoyable, the most important thing is working with people you really get on with and having fun! What is the point if you are not enjoying yourself? This advice could be also applied to our younger selves!
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
For me (Bridget) id have made sure to have taught myself how to produce…Joe has saved me in this department!
Joe would have told himself to get started on production way sooner!
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
I can’t pick. All the songs in our first EP are actually about the same people...they all make up a story, so isolating one would feel wrong.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
Spread Lies…our audience seem to love anything with a huge synth bass in it!! At this point our synth bass player should just go solo ;)
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
I (Bridget) tend to write the songs acoustically at the piano, then I pass them on to Joe to produce, arrange and create beautiful instrumentals with!
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
Our songs are ironically non-feminist to make a point to be feminist!!!!!! Not confusing at all…
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
Joe and I in real life (living together etc.) do have little disagreements, however musically we are always on the same page. This is how I knew we would make great music.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Our third single, ‘Spread lies’ is coming out on July 11th!! With our full EP coming out mid-August!! Thank you for having us! <3
