What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Music is a the best way to share emotions and feelings and a great way to express myself. I can not imagine my life without playing and creating music.
What do you like to do when you're not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I (Aurelien) like to walk in nature, to read and to watch movies and to drink beers Everything that happens in life influence my creativity (global warming, social relationship, heartbreak, death…)
How long has your band been around?
The band is about 15 years old but the current line up exists for 3 years
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
We are from a small city (Bressuire) in west of France I’m not sure this really influence our music.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you.
The band name is inspired by the legend of the boat the flying dutchman condemned to inherit on the ocean, I think that it’s a kind of allegory of our life as human being so flyingdeadman was I think a great name.
Tell me about the best and worst shows you have played.
I think the best and worst show was the same, indeed there were only 5-10 people in the audience but there was one guy who was listening to us eyes closed with a smile on his face. He had a great time listening our music but we were disappointed to have played in front of so few audiences.
Tell me about your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you haven't already?
We have no favorite venue to play we just expect to play in front of great people whatever the place
If you could play any show with any lineup who would be on the ticket?
Explosions in the sky, This will destroy you and Russian Circles
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band?
Work hard on your instrument, play with emotion, always listen the other musicians of your band, never give up even if you’re not famous. Creating is the most important thing.
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
Don’t let ourselves be influenced by people telling us what we should do with our music.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
“Near the shore” because it took me lots of time to write it even if it’s not full of musical difficulties however it’s the song that has the most successful song for listeners
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
I think it’s “56 seasons”, it the opening song when we play live, each part of this song blows my mind away when I play it.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
I compose the songs alone in front of my computer with my guitar, I record the ideas and when the song is built I submit it to the other band members to have their approbation. I don’t really know what inspire me, it depends of my mood. Our last EP “the night” was fully inspired by the movie “the night of the living dead” I 've let the ambiance of this movie guide the creations
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
We just want our listeners to make an emotional trip while listening, there’s a story that is different for each listener, that is the point.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
Sorry no disagreements in our band, we use to talk a lot to avoid them.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that's coming up?
We’ve released our last Ep on November 2020, we work hard to be ready to be back on stage as soon as possible. I’ve started to work on the new Ep but I take my time.
