Interview: Jaake Castro
Hello Jaake! Thank you for speaking with me today!
No, thank you for speaking with me
You recently released your song 'Chicken Noodle Soup'! Will you tell us a bit about it?
I did! Chicken Noodle Soup is a collaboration with a good friend of mine, Kin Cassini, who produced the track. I have the reputation of making crybaby music in general so I wanted to round out my catalog and give people a proper dance song.
What was the creative process for it?
It was entirely serendipitous. Kin and I had just got back from an All Black Lives Matter protest march. We were dancing around locked indoors due to the pandemic, very under the influence, and he jokingly said, "Jaake can write a hook on anything." He started playing random beats and I was just banging out lyrics and melodies but this one stuck with us. I sang almost the entire song in that moment. I was feeling nostalgic for everything, and there were these books that were popular when I was a child called "chicken noodle soup for the soul" and I started singing about being that for someone.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
My first musical obsession was for the song "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" by tears for fear. I think it's the only perfect song ever created. I was like 8/9 years old belting every lyric AND every instrument in the entire song. My next obsession was with Grace Jones and the ripples from that are still present in my music and aesthetic.
Who would be a dream collaboration for you?
SZA comes immediately to mind, every time she drops anything I think about how lucky we are to live through this period of music. Prinze George would make my life. James Fauntleroy, The 1975, Sakima, Christian Leave, and Troye Sivan the list goes on
Do you have a saying or piece of advice you carry with you that you like to pass on to other musicians?
Honestly the only thing I ever say when people ask for advice, (notice I said ask, cough cough) is to not waste time. You never know when your last days are gonna be.
Any other upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for?
Absolutely. I have two EPs that are stupidly close to being done and some music that I wrote for other artists.
Please let everyone know where they can keep up with you and your music!
