Hi Joey! Thank you for chatting with me today!
Of course!
Have you been working on any new projects lately?
Well, as everyone knows, things are still in flux from COVID. However, I am starting to put the finishing touches on my live album from my 2019/2020 tour and that should be out in January of 2022 at the latest. Still working out my business strategies for the release.
I am also working to finish a jazz/fusion album I recorded back in 2019. I still must mix and master along with finalizing my list of guest musicians on that one and hope to release it in late fall of 2022.
Right now, while working for my studio clients as a recording engineer, producer and session musician, I am preparing to release a collection of my singles from last year along with several new tracks and that will be out by summer time of this year. Still thinking about titles and release strategies, but most of the mixing and mastering is done on that project, so yeah, busy LOL!
What is your favorite part of your creative process?
I don’t know, I love everything about music and audio!
I guess if I had to pick something I would say I love the first act of creation, the initial inspiration of writing a song and then that moment when it is all done, and you know that the song is recorded and ready to share with the world!
What has been the biggest 'pinch-me' moment of your career so far?
I have had many things I value as moments where all the hard work has come together.
But one of the moments of the most validation is when I got a surprise Alive Day message from Alan Parsons saying that he thought I had “the best ears in the business”. That was just surreal!
I should explain that Alive Day is a celebration that I have quietly celebrated since the successful removal of my brain tumor as a child. My folks came up with the idea of celebrating the day I beat the odds and lived when everyone thought I wouldn’t. It was their way of keeping me focused on affirmation rather than fear.
Though the tumor left me blind and with many other health challenges, I am so grateful to be alive and living a life of intention and doing what I love—music!
Back in 2017, I started holding a free public Alive Day music festival in my hometown of Macon, GA, where I also serve as the official music ambassador as appointed by the city council and mayor.
Every year, my wonderful wife, Jennifer reaches out to friends, family and even some celebrities to ask them to share a message of support for Alive Day. Last year, Alan sent me a message. I have had the privilege to learn from Alan over the years and do some recording projects with him and I was thrilled for his support of Alive Day and his very unexpected comment about my skills! He had said some things that were complementary before in public, but now I have it on video LOL!
All I can say is that whenever I feel low or just at my wits end, I can go back to that message and get excited all over again about music! If one of the greats believes in me, who am I to disagree LOL!
Is there a song you wish you could have written?
Yeah, like a million LOL, but I wish I had written “Four Seasons in One Day” by Crowded House and “No Reply” by the Beatles!
What is your go to song to listen to lately?
“White Dress” by Lana Del-Ray and “Second Chance” by Peter Bjorn and John!
How do you hope for your artistry to affect the world?
I just want to leave the world a little better than I found it and I am content to do so one song and one person at a time!
If you check out Amazon, you can find the book “88 More Ways Music Can Change Your Life” where I am a featured author telling a story about how I did just that one night at a local bar in Macon. It is a great book full of amazing stories including those of Todd Rundgren, Cyndi Lauper, Katy Perry and many more!!!
What is a piece of advice that you carry with you that you want to pass on to your fans?
One thing is for sure, if you don’t try you will fail!
Please let everyone know where they can find you!
