Hi Kendra! Great to have you here!
Thanks for inviting me to interview!
You are releasing a new song leading up to an album soon! Tell us a bit about it!
Absolutely! I am so excited for this track. It is the first single from my upcoming album "of Consideration". The single is titled "So Hollywood".
It's inspired by my time spent seeing the inner-workings of the way Hollywood churns. It's super edgy and filled with personal insight.
The song is big rock 'n roll style playing and draws the listener in with awesome imagery mixed with my classic storytelling flow.
What was the inspiration for the creation of this song?
I was triggered to write the song through an interview I had with Paxton on @narcabuse_tv on Instagram. The podcast centers around conversations about recovering and getting through narcissistic and toxic relationships. I was describing a story about my past or something similar, and the way I started setting the scene was by saying "Come along and imagine this." The host was like "that's a song right there," and "So Hollywood" was born.
Have you had any 'pinch - me' moments in the process of writing and recording everything?
100 percent. I was recently recording up in San Francisco at Hyde Street Studios for my new album. To start off my session for the week, I wanted to carefully choose which song to record first. I decided on starting with the most wordy and 'difficult' one. I thought, if I can knock this one out of the park, then I can handle any of my other songs, no prob. It's almost like a freestyle rap the way I wrote it. The song is titled "Wildflower" and is inspired by panicky anxiety through the lense of a "A Tribe Called Quest" style. I love smooth hiphop so much. What was a pinch me moment was the fact that I recorded this super duper quick-paced song with so many lyrics in one take. Also, the song had been arranged in a certain way for the studio cut that is different from the way I play it live too, which I remembered mid-take, and I kept thinking to myself, 'I know what comes next'. I just felt the music and played along with it. Absolutely nailed it. It was a remarkable experience in knowing my own work inside out.
What song are you currently the most proud of or most excited about from your new work?
I think I am most proud of the song "Wildflower" that I was just talking about and the song "Good Ole Ace of Spades". I feel like "Ace of Spades" is one of my most solid on the album when it comes to songwriting. I play a beautiful grand piano on the track and sing about the decision-making process of where to live. It's a conundrum sometimes as a touring musician to answer the question, 'where is home'?
Who do you like to share your new music with first, before it is released?
My fans. Normally, I debut my songs on stage at shows or via live-streams. It's all about my bunny fans. I love them so much.
Who has been your biggest cheerleader as an artist?
My family. I joke that my dad is my best on-the-ground publicist. I will get Instagram messages from people saying, "I met your dad. He told me about your music and to follow you." Makes me smile. My mom is super supportive too. She helps me pick out outfits for my videos and the red-carpet, since she is a fashion blogger and stylist. My brother is also so great. Him and his wife let me stay with them when I am performing in their area. So much love.
How do you make sure you stay authentic to you when creating new music?
It's got to have the Kendra Bunny vibe. If I can feel, see, and hear myself in the music... If I can feel myself growing through the song, then I am in.
It's all about expansion and self-expression. Discovery of self through compassion and musical love.
