Interview: Marshall Potts
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
My dad used to play guitar and sing to me and my siblings at the end of our bed at bedtime... so I think that stirred the desire to play guitar... but it was a heartbreak that inspired me to write my first song at 12.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I love skiing, riding quads, riding snowmobiles, staying active on the ranch and taking care of the animals. I found myself in this place from a-lot of pain previously... I realized if I am full-filled I can follow my passion instead of feeling like a victim. That's why my music slogan is Heal Yourself Heal The World.
How long has your band been around?
It's just me so on and off professionally for about 20 years. Now it's my main job:)
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
I live on 160 acres in the middle of nowhere outside of Kamloops BC Canada... I came here to reconnect to my soul and it is why I’m a full time recording artist now.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
I'll credit that one to my mum lol:)
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
I would say right now it was the Heal The Earth show last spring cause we got to be featured with many Canadian legends like Gowan from Styx, Alan Frew from Glass Tiger, actor/singer Tom Jackson, The Spoons and many more.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
In terms of places, I've performed in France, Sweden, USA and Canada. I got to shoot a music video in Spain which was awesome.
I have a feeling my favourite shows will be the UK but haven't played there yet. My parents came from Salford, Manchester before moving to Canada and we have family there who have never seen me perform. It's a dream I mean to make happen sooner than later:)
If you could play any show with any line up, who would be on the ticket?
Country I'd like to perform with Chris Stapleton, Eric Church, Ashley McBryde, Brother's Osbourne, Luke Combs
Pop/Rock world it would be Tom Cochrane, Bryan Adams, One Republic, Cold Play, Rush, Tragically Hip, The Guess Who, The Who, Queen, U2, Oasis
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Stay independent, if you sign a deal make it for Distribution only, don't believe your own press and stay grounded. Be a decent human being to everyone you meet along the way:)
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
Don't listen to the nay sayers this is your life and its your story so damn it go out there and be the hero not the victim of it.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
All my songs start with an emotion than melody than lyrics... if I have that combination right and no distractions from my ego than I remember those as my favourites cause they come from a place that isn't always me. It's like listening to the track for a first time for me too. Hearts In The Sky from the new upcoming album called The STORM is my most emotional connection.
Which songs are your favourite to play and which get requested the most?
hmmm my fav songs currently are The Storm and Free And Easy. Both challenge my vocally and it’s a rush to pull them off live.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
I write now because I feel like music helps people evolve and heal... listening to music is a great way to become introspective which is where all healing comes from... it forms lasting memories and becomes the soundtrack to your life. For me writing is like meditation when I am doing it right... it's being FULLY in the moment.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
I want to inspire others to heal there past so they can stop their minds running rampant on their dreams and remove the fear of living your own individual path and in turn inspire others to do the same... the ripple effect.. Heal Yourself Heal The World thang :) (Fear is The Dream Killer)
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
My band rocks, they are all decent human beings with amazing talent. Super lucky that way.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
The plan is to flow with the intense energy world wide right now and bring people back together through music. To embrace the Age Of Aquarius and stand in our own power with the intention of helping others to do the same.
I would like to end the year with a world tour :)
