Interview: Obselite
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Honestly, music has always been the #1 thing i've always wanted to do.
its been my main focus and i don't think theres anything else i would want to do.
i work in the marijuana industry and thats been good to me. but as far as an outlet for creativity goes, being a frontman is all i ever wanted to do.
What do you like to do when you're not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
(Justin Kelter) I'm a huge gamer, i am a retro and modern game collector, i watch alot of anime, sci fi movies, i cosplay, and model Techwear.
How long has your band been around?
we are a brand new band. we have been working on music since 2019, we put out a short EP in 2020 and finally just released our first full length February 2022. we haven't played a show yet but we are putting together a big cyberpunk themed event to debut our live show set for later this summer.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
Detroit, michigan, USA. i've been apart of the Detroit metal scene for about 12 years now. i used to play in a thrash metal band called Euphoria, sadly though after a good run we fell apart and i decided that i wanted to do Industrial style metal.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
Kiel our guitar player and i were throwing name ideas that fit the futuristic cyberpunk aesthetic and we thought of fear factorys album "obsolete" and kiel was like "how about ObsELITE" and thats how it became to be!
We are all fans of fear factory so i guess in a way its a way to pay homage to them.
Tell me about the best and worst shows you have played.
well since ObsElite has yet to play a show. in my own personal experience with my old band Euphoria, we played overseas in europe, and Hamburg, Germany was the best show i ever played. the crowd was amazing and very supportive. the other bands we played with were all super talented and i felt lucky to have been apart of it.
Tell me about your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you haven't already?
mmm, i can't say that i have a favorite venue but hopefully that will change once ObsElite starts playing some shows, and touring this year.
If you could play any show with any lineup who would be on the ticket?
3teeth or Static X for sure
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band?
if you have a dream, go out and chase it, no matter how impossible it may same to achieve just go for it. do everything you possibly can to make it come true.
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
Be open minded and quit being hard headed. Try new things and get therapy hahahah!
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
Hivemind, probably because it was the first song we did for our new album, and we did a music video for it, we got like 31,000 views in 3 weeks, and for a brand new band thats an amazing feat.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
I can't answer that since we still have yet to play a show.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
We kinda have a party vibe when we get together to record. we all have ideas we hash out and since we record everything ourselves we just go crazy while recording and keep whatever we like the most.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
We are a Sci-Fi themed band so there really isn't any super deep emotional meaning behind any of our songs. everything is basically fiction and imaginitive.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
Not really, we are all really close friends, and have worked in our own seperate projects over the years. we come to conclusions quick and try to be on the same page no matter what.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that's coming up?
we have more music videos coming out, going to release some singles throughout the year, our debut show/event, and a tour thats TBA.
