Interview: SeeEyeGee
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
I've always been passionate about music. My mother playing Sugar Hill Gang on the console unit was my first glimpses into how amazing Hip Hop was. I can't imagine what life I would have without music.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I try to stay busy, if not being a parent and partner, my music, if not my music, one of two side hustles.
How long has your band been around?
I've been a solo act for 20 years.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
Bellingham. It had no bearing on my music.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
Seeeyegee is a not-so-clever acronym for CIG the initials for my last serious business attempt. It was a major milestone for me and it holds a special place and I wanted to commemorate that.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
My first one. I played at the Underground Nightclub in the University District in Seattle, Washington. My friend at the time, Thom, and Donald Glaude allowed my to play the last 15 minutes of his set, often and I fell in love with EDM and DJ'ing.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
No favorites... yet. Of the places I haven't played at so far... EDC LV is my number one wish followed by Tomorrowland.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Tiesto, Robbie and Scott Hardkiss, Donald Glaude, Rakim, ATCQ, LONTA, Wu-Tang, Beyonce, Billie Eilish, and Pete Rock with assorted surprise special guests.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Take criticism without taking it personally. There are nuggets of value in even the harshest criticism. Believe in yourself. Brush off the haters and keep going. Surround yourself with positive people that want to see you happy AND successful. Take risks, but measure those risks first.
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
Make the safe choice more often. Responsibility is a good thing. Trust more.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
Oh man. Wow. Just one, huh? Well, I'd have to say So Cold or There Tonight with Shayla. They're good songs that are reminiscent of the good ol days of Hip Hop.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
Feel the Lemonade. Easily.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
Life. Everyday Life and the need for more sources of positivity.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
That life can be a joy if you're willing to work for it.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
Yes. I typically conflict with talent or producers and I try to look at things from their angle.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Well, I have three more albums coming between now and June; Head Trup and Acid Trip. Please go check out Field Trip and leave a like and a follow on my Insta. Thank you so much!!
