Interview: Single by Sunday
What got you into music. and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Jonny.... I just kind of fell into it really. Certainly, I grew up with lots of different types of music being played around the house, so I think it was always going to figure in my life.
Josh..... yeah, kind of similar for me too. My Dad had an old guitar that I used to mess about on, so I just kind of yeah, got interested that way.
If we had not gotten into music, we’d probably be on the run from the Police or locked up in some foreign jail somewhere.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
Jonny..... I like to sleep. Does that influence my creativity? No. I certainly think I work better when I'm allowed to wake up as opposed to when I'm woken up early. I also like to work on my clothing line.
Josh..... I used to like sleeping but then came my beautiful baby daughter and sleep went out of the window.... lol. Apart from that, I'm a gamer, so I go pretty hard on that. Does it affect my creativity? no not really because when it's time to write, we just get our heads together.
How long has your band been around?
Josh.... We started back in July 2015. It sounds like so long ago, when I say it like that.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
Jonny.... we're from East Kilbride, just outside of Glasgow. Has it influenced our music? No not really. We've always kind of leaned more towards US Pop Punk bands more so than Glasgow based bands. There are some good ones here but as influences, no not really. A lot of our influences come from life experiences, like relationships and being out on tour and eating strange food and stuff like that.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
Josh.... well, that's our guarded, dirty little secret. We don't tell anyone where the band name comes from. We know that that might sound a bit pretentious but we've vowed not to say until we've 'made it'. We kind of like to hear what other people think the name means.
Jonny..... what we can say though, is that it means a lot to us.
Josh..... it means the world to me.
Jonny.... well, it means the universe to me.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
Jonny.... most memorable for me would be when we played at Vans Warped Tour in Buffalo New York. It was great getting to play there in amongst some of my all time favourite bands.
Josh.... I think my favourite show would have to be headlining at Boston 'First Night' in front of 50k+ people..... nice!
What is your favourite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
Josh.... I haven't really got a favourite venue to play at except maybe the O2 in Glasgow, we did a headline show there. The problem now though is that it burnt down.
Jonny.... despite that sounding like an admission of guilt, I swear, we didn't do it.
Josh.... no, we didn't start the fire! Drum roll please!!!
If you could play any show with any line-up, who would be on the ticket?
Jonny..... dead or alive??? For me it would be people like Sum 41, All Time Low, The Beach Boys, The Ramones, Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse. When do you want me to stop?
Josh.... I think I'd go for people like, Ed Sheeran, My Chemical Romance, Maroon Five.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Jonny.... I think the best advice that I would offer would be, to play the music that you want to play and not what you think you should be playing.
Josh.... I'd tell my younger self to get a proper job!!! No seriously, I'd say something like 'do not expect to crack the industry over night, it's not about fair!!!'
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
Josh, all of our songs are our babies. We love each one of them as much as the other.
Jonny.... Yeah, it would be wrong to pick a favourite. No parent should ever pick a favourite child.
Josh.... Unless it's the middle!
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
Jonny.... The creative process is really just having or coming up with an idea and building on it.
Josh.... I'd agree; you try things, guitar riffs or a few lines (I mean) lyrics and see how they flow, how they fit together.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
Josh.... I don't think that we really do the message thing in our music, or at least we don't preach, like some bands or artists do.
Jonny..... I think we're too busy talking about break ups and that kind of stuff.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
Josh.... the only thing that we disagree on is that Jonny is always right.
Jonny.... that's because, I am, always right.
Jonny.... we're like siblings; we fight, we write, we shout, we do a show and repeat.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Jonny..... We are planning a lot of stuff for this year, including (hopefully) finishing off our tour of Germany, which was postponed due to Covid. We're also heading back to the US to do a bunch of shows which again were postponed because of Covid. We've also got some UK live dates that we are looking at at the moment and of course, we're going to be releasing some more good music.
