Interview: Soulpax
Who inspired you to get into music?
There are so many musicians that really drew us into music but honestly it was the music itself. From such a young age before we even knew who was playing what song or was playing what instrument it was the sounds themselves that drew us in. It was always crazy that people out arrange these different sounds and textures in a way that invoke so much emotion in people and we needed to get in on that!
When was the first time you recall thinking that you wanted to pursue music as your career?
For me (Julian Harris) there was never a question about weather or not to pursue music! I knew right out the gate that this is what I wanted to do. I would watch all these old concert recordings of anything from Jimi Hendrix to Sister Rosetta Tharpe and just be so captivated by how these people were able to express themselves to the fullest. I also couldn't believe that people could truly be making these sounds and singing the way that they did and so from the get go I was curious about the whole process!
What is your favorite song you've ever released and why?
We have a song that will be made available April 29th called Postcard Daze that we are so excited about. This sone is one of our more ambitious creations. We really attempted to keep things jazzy while experimenting heavily with alternative song forms all the while keeping things poppy and digestible. So far every time we play this tune at a gig we get a resounding applause from the whole crowd. We can't wait for you to hear what we've cooked up!
Who are some of the artists currently inspiring you?
While writing this new batch of songs we really wanted some perspective as to how we can keep things jazzy and soulful while still maintaining the pop format. For this we found a lot of amazing artists in the current Alt R&B/ Indie Pop genres! Kyle Dion, Leven Kali, The Futurerelics, Samm Henshaw, and Dante Elephante are all killer artists in the Alt R&B world that really resonated with us and had hip vibes that we wanted to emulate.
What is your favorite song to perform?
We do a rendition of Aint Nobody by Chaka Khan that gets the crowd so hype! Aside from bing an R&B staple this song really gets the crowd moving and showcases who we are influenced by. If you're interested in hearing what our cover of this song sounds like we have it up on our YouTube channel for you to enjoy!
What are you hoping to see in the music world as it continues to evolve?
You can already see that there has been a shift in songwriting where artists are taking greater steps to push their respective genres. It's so cool for us to see how far these artists are able to push things without falling off into the avant garde. We defiantly want more cool things to continue to happen in the art of songwriting!
