Interview with Anchor The Storm
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Os: I come from a musical family. We all sing and play something. If I wasn’t doing music, I’d probably be a writer or chef.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
We play video games, exercise/work out, read books, and go to the beach a good deal. Florida is nice like that. Going outside hits the reset button. Clears the mind and allows us to come at the music with renewed energy.
How long has your band been around?
Anchor has been around since 2020. Right around quarantine.
Where are you based and how did that influence your music?
We’re based out of Orlando Florida. None of us are Florida natives. Os is from Texas, Tefl is a New Yorker, and Matt hails from Connecticut. We all met here. No Florida, no Anchor.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
It’s a play on words. Anchor is meant as an action. Like anchoring a race. Being steady and having it together. Anchoring the Storming is about remembering who you are and holding to it when things get messy.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
We played a coffee house recently. Fully plugged in and we were sure we’d get kicked out for being too loud and too metal. Much to our surprise, the staff and clientele loved it and we absolutely rocked the place. The energy was amazing.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
Venue is less important than audience. We want to play anywhere people vibe with the music and want to have a beer afterwards and have a nice chat.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Pantera (Matt’s Favorite)
Avenged Sevenfold (Telf’s Favorite)
King’s X (Os’s Favorite)
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Don’t bother comparing yourself to anyone on any level. Figure out what you love about this and do it. If you love the live shows, play out. If you want to record and share, do it. The more focused you are on the art, the more help you will need to get heard. This isn’t a lifestyle for casuals. Love every second you get to do this.
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
Be honest with yourself in all ways.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
What Remains is a song about how we deal with losing friends and family in the last few years. It’s got a pretty hopeful message and it reminds us to keep remembering our loved ones.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
Unleashed is super fun. It has two guitar solos that Matt and I share and seems to go over super well with our audiences. Hemispheric Dominance gets a lot of requests by our Band Family.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
We send each other recorded ideas and talk about how to make them go. Then we combine them in a single recording. From there, we jam them as a band to see what works in the heat of the moment. We get inspired by what feels and sounds good to hear. Lyrics often come last. Those are inspired by doing what needs to be done to live well.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
As musicians and people, we’re trying to constantly grow and become the best versions of ourselves. The lyrics reflect that.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
We try to act like adults and talk it out. We’ve done pretty good so far ironing things out early and not letting issues get messy. Handling differing opinions quickly and fairly helps avoid the real drama.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Shows, Singles, Videos, Artwork, Touring. We are living the lifestyle. We just released our Single Unleashed which is available on all streaming platforms and YouTube. Thanks for your time and enjoy the listen!
