Interview with Brandon Daniels of amenazar
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
To be brutally honest, I got into music to drown out abuse and kill the pain in my heart. It was and is the only thing that can get a person completely out of the present and take them on a journey.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
Learning new skills, whatever it may be. Currently, it’s learning to fly a plane.
How long has your band been around?
Coming up on three decades.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
St. Joseph, Missouri (United States) I’d say it drove us to the edge, trying to escape a town that didn’t provide many ways to do so brought out more raw grit and angst. We weren’t lying about how we felt and / or how we feel.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
Our singer ‘Scott Foulk’, was trying to find another way to say “mean”, “trouble” or “badass” So he searched a Spanish dictionary, as all of the English words had been played out.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
The most recent shows. Not that they were the biggest our loudest, but that it’s the most together we have ever been. Firing on every cylinder like there’s no tomorrow!
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
All of them. Yes, Red Rocks, Wimbledon Stadium, Carnegie Hall, Late Night Television Shows.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
At this moment I’d say The Scorpions, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Ghost and Guns N’ Roses.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Have fun, but hold a regular job. Go to as many concerts possible. Learn the recording process, and do not let the illusion of “the party” take priority.
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
To bet on Al Bundy, running for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
All of them, they all resonate with me in a different way depending on my mood.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
Screwdriver, Lie to Me, Ghost, Gentle Hand, Miss U Like I Should
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
Each of us bring a certain skillset to the band. There’s usually a riff or a feel, a song lyric, or a current affair in the world. Sometimes by osmosis, we all smash on the same page at once. We go with our feelings.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
Deep messages that reach across the board, whether it be emotions, darkness, heartbreak, happiness, inspirational, weirdness, or even sexy and fun. We want people to know they’re not alone and that our music will be there to maximize the vibe.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
Of course! Sometimes you just have to put differences aside, shut up and play music!
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
We (amenazar) have a ton of songs that have never been recorded or released so our goal is to continue recording and releasing our music. With that said, be on the lookout for new song releases in early April through Mid-May of 2023!
