Interview with Caedeous
Hello there, nice to have you on Volatile Weekly! What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music, what would you be doing today?
Hello Volatile Weekly, first we would love to thank you for having us in Caedeous here with you and having this amazing chat. Well if i did not have gotten into music, honestly i would had been lost. Music for me is a priceless human quality which can not be looked away. Its fantastic reflextion and expression of our emotions into frequencies we can listen to be forever left behind, an extract of those human souls and their history and feelings. Would not have followed this path i would had been forever lost in obscurity and darkness. Music gives the freedom of mind and let the steam buildup from current world society move away to other places, if you understand what i am saying. Music is indeed a human wonder that should be nurtured and cherish for aeons to come.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music, and how does that influence your creativity?
Usually when not playing music, we often find ourselves playing videogames, reading books, watching movies and do other mundane life tasks. However is those exact experiences that brings Caedeous creativity in order and checked upon. Books and movies and even the videogames we play have a very deep connection to what we do as an entity of our own.
How long has your band been around?
Caedeous has been around as a studio project for 8 years however it was only in 2017 that the things started to happen in terms of albums released to the public. In terms of sound development and current creative vision and direction, Caedeous considers Obscurus Perpetua the year zero (reset) from the previous to actual lineup you see currently that departs from the studio project to a fully fledged band, this was the time when Thomas Blanc joined and Rosmerta.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
Caedeous is an international band, we have our founder / leader and composer from Portugal, our vocalists from France and United Kingdom, the session bassist and produceder is from UK aswell, drummer from Italy. Our guitarrist was from Brazil living in Europe however he has departed the lineup due to personal reasons where he could not commit to our current live and studio schedule, therefore we are currently looking for one replacement.
In terms of influences we are motivated and driven with the intense passion for horror and creepy movies and books. Our sound tries to capture that hollywood horror soundtrack orchestra essence associated with the intense extreme metal technical and speedy aspects.
Thomas, Paulo J. Mendes and Rosmerta passion drives this intense flame as a matter of speaking. Paulo in terms of composition and musical structure with the intense ideas aswell from Thomas and lyrics.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
Well, since the project at that time, was all based in Portugal, our founder and leader Paulo J. Mendes, did the joining of two portuguese words "Fall" (Cair) and God (Deus) and with some latin shapping he joined both to symbolize the name Fall of God as Caedeous. However this name also has also hidden message in the form of an anagram, that means to seduce and shield from the fall from god. If is a powerful messagen behind the concept of the band name.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
Currently Caedeous since it was mainly a studio project for years, we did not do any shows so far. However this lineup fully of seasoned musicians from well known and estabilished on the metal industry are ready to go to stages. We are working on that currently and wanting to move to stages in 2024, currently already with a live event for release party of the 3rd studio album in a streaming live event to happen this year.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
We are aiming to play at some festivals down the road at some point, Wacken, Hellfest and Bloodfest come to mind that we definatly will want to play in at some point in the future.
If you could play any show with any line-up, who would be on the ticket?
We would love to play with some of our own brothers and sisters of Black Sunset / MDD Records such as Asphagor, Disminded, Vermocracy, Mastic Scum etc... Since we like those bands a lot, huge wall of sound and powerful themes at are on line with our sound aswell in Caedeous. However there are so many great bands out there that we would also love to know and play with. The choices are immense nowadays.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
I think that the most experienced advice i would give is, practice a lot on your instrument, invest in yourself in terms of musical learning and proper schooling since it will help you down the road. Believe in yourselves, when you believe in something do the necessary sacrifice to make things happen. Also, hire a good PR agency to do the job since they are professionals in what they do in order to maximize your fully potential in terms of marketing.
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
That questions is wonderful, sometimes I do think on that. If i could go back i would say to myself, "Not all things are meant to happen the way you think they will", "There are some musical relations and connections which should stay on the past since they did not work out initially, why should they do again in future?", and also "believe in yourself and stop current projects and invest in yourself and your projects and ideas, since that will be the game-changer", "Get involved with same mindset and goals team". This would had prevented me some ache but if i did brought this to my younger self i would now not be who i am today, but they would definatly be wise and experienced words from a older version of myself.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
There were several songs over the years, but from first album would be Corbie the Deceiver, from second album would be Obscurus Perpetua and Magisteri Peccatorum, from the third album Pandemonium, Cruxis Inferni and Maledictio Animae. All of these songs were composed and written on different phases of live and all bring with them different feelings, intense feelings, from that current period in our lifes. The darkness, frustration, rage, desperation, love and absolution and salvation are all translated into passionate songwritting with those emotions written on all single melodies and song structure.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
Curiously, Pandomonium, Cruxis Inferni, Corbie the Deceiver, Surge Tenebris and Tormentis Aeterna. A lot of people ask for this ones the most. And yes these songs will make it to the live setlist amonsgt others. The live streaming event will bring all of these.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
All starts with Paulo J. Mendes composing the orchestral parts very inspired by current world events and also horror stories and movies. After that is done the structure and ideas are checked with Thomas and Rosmerta and we start the brainstorming together to make it all even more stronger and cohesive. Afterwards we start working with the bass, drums and guitars.
Since we do now have a fully team of seasoned professional musicians with us aswell, on which we can see already the results on the 3rd album Malum Supplicium the process is more complex in terms of musical placement, since this processo now involves Rich Gray in bass, producing , mixing and mastering but aswell having the ideas of Federico Leone on the drums which will make the 4th album even more intenser than ever before.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
Our music is very intense in terms of content, we usually tell stories (horror) however we pass the message on how the current society and world is broken into pieces and is shreded. We are walking a very dark parth currently in terms of humanity, and seems the battle of angels and demons have being inbalanced tending to full darkness mode. So we try to put those emotions of desperation, anger, rage, salvation and absolution on our songs , melodies and lyrics.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
Well one of the most things are we are so grateful with this lineup, is that we are all same mindset guys and girls with the same vision, artistic direction and want all the same endgame. Even on terms of personalities we have the same tastes for videogames, books, movies. Its like we are single organism, so weird but yeah.
Since we do not have disagreements, we plan ahead what we want, where we want to go be in 1 to 2 years, and what we want to do in terms of sounding and we all work together to make that happen. Of course there are always some ideas that work and others do not, but we improve them over the feedback we get over the years for a better product on the next album.
Additionally, some or us have been through a lot recently, specially with the economic inflation and some serious money, housing and funding issues arrived but still we were there for all of each other, supporting and caring so we have prevailed those moments and we never stop believing in Caedeous and the team as a whole and what we could achieve or be.
I would dare to say we are stronger than ever before, more interconnected and solidified due to those inflation money issues that have arrived this last 2022 and 2023. And what does not kill you, makes your harder and experienced seasoned person. Caedeous has been through a lot over the years and we are still here stronger than before, and this dream lineup is a blessing of all sorts. One for all and all for one mentality.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Yes, we do have our schedule very busy. Shortcoming is the release of the album on the 21st April of 2023 followed shortly by the live streaming event / release party. For short-term we are working to get live concerts and festivals for 2024. In terms of long-term we will start working on the 4th album starting on October 23 -July 24 for a temptative release of early 2025.
