Interview with Damn Drew
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Well I’ve been into music my whole life, not just my own music, but also songwriting with other artists. . I’ve lived many lives already. I have played sport to a high level, living in different countries to even owning a restaurant in my early twenties. I’ve always been someone who could get creative with the resources in that moment of life and because I’m not afraid of change I don’t mind going with it when different opportunities come my way, but in that time music has always stayed with me and I’m glad that I’m finally working on my own music, because that’s what I feel like I’m meant to do.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I have so many things I do with my spare time. Currently working six days a week in the studio to make things happen. I love sports an most physical activities. I’m pretty competitive so being active and moving around helps my mental health.
How long has your band been around?
I have just started my band
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
I have been here, there and everywhere. I grew up in east London, which gave me a eventful opened my eyes to a lot at a young age which in a way I’m thankful for as I grew up fast and learned that there is beauty in the madness.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
My real name is Andrew and damn drew sounds like Andrew but cooler.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
At the moment I’ve only played a only few shows under Damn Drew in smaller venues. I’d say right now probably The Courtyard in Shoreditch.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
I’d love to play at Alexandra Palace, I love that venue, because it is such a great place for for a band.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Turnstile would be sick.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
I’d give this advice to anyone, including my younger self and say find people who want the same things as you in terms of success. Surround yourself with positive people and keep going. There are people who are not gonna believe in you, and that might almost make you not believe in you. But no matter what, if you keep believing in yourself and keep that spark alive, anything is possible.
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
If you want to do something, just go for it.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
I’ve been living in my studio for the last year writing so much new music working everyday and without doubt my unreleased music will turn a few heads.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
My favourite songs are all the new songs I’ve been working on.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
My creative process always starts with an emotion that i feel either at the time or a feeling from the past, then I really immerse myself in that moment. Almost like a method actor would do.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
I don’t like philosophize or preach in my music as I don’t proclaim to know the answers for people but I want to create music that people hopefully relate to what I’m going through. An it’s so nice to read messages from real people who have hit me up and tell me you helped me get through a difficult time. That’s honestly what makes me the happiest as a artist.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
Not really, we just talk things through because we wanna make the best music
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
I have so many new plans this year with so much new music coming that I can’t wait release and definitely will be touring around the Uk as some talks are already in the works.
