Interview with DUNE
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
We all grew up listening to Metal and dreamed of having the ability to play on stage and create such kind of music, having such outlet is very liberating.
All of us are doing music aside from our own professional careers
Samer our Vocalist is an HR Business Partner
Mustafa The Drummer is An IT Engineer
Mishary The Guitarist is in Corporate Communications
Mamdoh The Bassist is a Corporate Banker & Digital artist ( done all of the band artwork )
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
Most of the band members are parents and have our own hobbies and interests, usually, our lives and day-to-day struggles influence our music very heavily and we get loads of songs ideas from that.
How long has your band been around?
Dune was established in 2004 and reached our peak musically at the Saudi Metal scene at the time till we had to go through hiatus at 2007 and band members went on different paths as some got married and some got kids and some left music scene while others joined multiple other bands with different genres.
After revival of the metal scene during the cultural changes that Saudi was going through we made our come back 2021 and we never plan on slowing down
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
We are Saudi based band which and our culture have influenced our music style and feel significantly, this effects the style and subjects and also some time the oriental music scale influence in some parts of the songs
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
The name of the band is influenced by our culture in Saudi, Though the name Dune means sand hill in normal language, Dune in saudi slang is usually called to Thugs and hooligan’s, it was kind of a joke and we went with it
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
The first Riyadh Inferno Fest 2022 was an epic show , the crowd was insane and the bands line up was great , it was one of the first big metal shows since a very long time , last metal show in Riyadh was around 2008.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
We have a lack of venues in Saudi , though the ones we have are trying their best and are good but we really wish if we had more options
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
We would definitely play with , Testament , Pantera , Slayer , KORN , Metallica .
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
For someone who is just getting into a band , enjoy it and have fun , the fun factor is very important and also dedication is a major factor to a band success and without it the band will not go anywhere
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
Learn more of music theory and practice more.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
This is a hard question, I would say Reject is my favorite as musically it has lots of musical elements and mood changes.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
We usually get asked to play Reject, but my favorite song to play live is Sieve , the power of the song live is epic.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
There are multiple ways that we follow in creating our songs, sometimes we have a subject in mind and start creating the music based on the feel we want to deliver of the song and then the lyrics would follow
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
Our music presents us and stories from our Saudi culture and also our own personal struggles, we also believe that thrash is a style is a genre that will never die.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
As every band and groups that is going through creative process, disagreements would arise and it is about how to manage them.
For us it is an open discussion and its all about talking things over and the style of the band music and sound, it helps that we are all good friends too.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
We will keep on going and we are planning multiple live shows and a tour within GCC countries and maybe Egypt and Jordan.
We really wish everyone would give our EP a listen and also we working already on new material that will be released in the future.
