Interview with Eye Steal
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Remi - A very special person who is no longer with the living definitely nurtured a gift that had already been sown by my parents. I think they wanted a musician I just don't know if they liked the one they got. About a 3 years ago I found a bunch of vhs tapes of myself when I was super young, I always had some kind of instrument around or in my hand... Honestly had I not continued music... I don't think there's a universe I don't and if there is I wouldn't want to experience it. The pain my music has brought me would fail in comparison to no music at all...
Dani- Celine Dion. I'd still be doing the same thing... being a glorified piece of garbage
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
Remi - It used to be nothing but the bad stuff for the longest time... Same old cliche, I don't know if it still isn't in some way or another... but I enjoy going outside now... I have some other hobbies now as well in my private life that I’m enjoying a lot. For someone like myself I needed to diversify my interest because with music I've been darkly obsessed for over a decade and it's so unhealthy. so unbalanced. When you romanticize about the worst parts of this world and only find identity by living through your art, you can start to see how this equation starts to surpass self-destruction and into danger and terror.
Dani- Nothing. I like to sit on my phone all day...
Remi- hahahahahahah
How long has your band been around?
Remi- Hard to say but if I had to give it an official date 2016
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
Remi- Toronto didn't always influence our music but somewhere around the release of b.u.r.n.a.l.i.v.e it started to darken the sound. Started to lash out more. Was consumed by my lyrics... No longer writing about myself or my past I was referencing my experiences in an extremely dark connotation. I dunno, I think it's behind me now. The damage has been done and I'll need to live with that now. People are not as forgiving as they might lead you to believe. We want to virtue signal about mental health but burry anyone experiencing it. There shame, my strength and Dani's beauty are all I care to write about now.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
The band name has more sentimental value than sense. It comes from a time in my life, when magic was still a thing here. Maybe we should change it...
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
Remi - Keeping it PG, Krampus ball was a spectacle. King Zirco of SQUID LID knows how to throw a party. the whole event just looks so cool I love tripping out on it... I had to go back the following year when we weren’t playing. hahaha I think I know what Dani's going to say but let's hear it...
Dani - haha most memorable show would definitely be when we played with 3TEETH & Ho99o9
Remi- YUP here it comes...
Dani- and I flashed my 3TEETH panties at Alexis. I think Remi pulled his pants down to. hahaha I dunno or playing at the Atria on the FILTHY ONES tour w/ DEPRESSION ERA , during their set a crazy guy came in and started fighting the sound guy, which is when Remi choked him out unconscious, that was pretty fucken rad, guy deserved it. Honestly, there's been so many memorable shows playing in Eye Steal, I have a lot of fun playing in the band. He's a fuckin music god, and grossly under appreciated. I see how people get jealous of him and turn on him. I've seen people use the good in him. It's not right. but it often isn't for the ones like him.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
Remi- Maaaaan I liked The rocket & Kathedral oh and nocturne, Masonic,Coalition was decent to I dunno so many places we haven’t played but at the same time so many shows, it can be a bit of a blur. Honestly, I think I speak for both of us when I say we'd play fuckin anywhere...
We've played trap house's and weird venues and sometime those end up being a better time than some of these big sought-after venues. I’m not saying there not sick to and can definitely get nutty but I just mean I try not to have an expectation of anything you know... A place that I want to be good sometimes isn't and that just no fun.
Dani- Opera house is my top venue. I haven’t really thought about any particular venues but I’ll play them all.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Remi- Fuckin Head Wound City - AFI (96) - Intermission with a Massive Attack & Orgy Collab - Eye Steal - Korn & Manson close the night with a Nirvana cover
Dani- IAMX - smashing pumpkins (EARLY) -Deftones - EYE STEAL!!
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Remi - I dunno... I knew nothing was forever, I know nothing is... My younger self was inspirational haha maybe my advice would be... to be more like him...
Dani- No advise. Be about it.
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be? Remi- If your band is good you're going to eat a lot of limes... People love tequila Dani- Enjoy the ride more
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
Remi- The songs that mean the most are the ones hardest to play for one reason or another. Sometimes it's just too close to the heart or a person whom a song or lyric could be about has died. It just doesn’t feel good anymore makes me pissy or something. But I love all the work we put out, It all means something to me. There is no "most"
Dani- I Can't Be There... It was my first bass line I wrote for eye steal
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
Remi-Fuckin WORMS is mad fun when we're just fucking on point and crushing! it definitely makes me smile sometimes. Push & I Can't Be There are therapeutic to sing, But hands down Ordinary Girl most requested :|
Dani- I love playing Exile, Push & b.u.r.n.a.l.i.v.e
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
Remi- Year after year the process certainly changes. Especially since Dani's move to bass. We've been collaborating probably for the first time ever musically. She's so much cooler than me, so I think we'll be a hit with the kids now...
Dani- For the most part, I piggyback on Remis sick licks. Life and events inspire me.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
Remi- It's ok to fight back it's cool to bleed, honesty is a weapon. Worms are loosely people to! but for real the message will always be clear to me and I think to most of the fans. I know they get it. I read the comments and see it all man and a lot of you fuckin worms really get us. If there's a certain message that you think a song is giving and you find relation to it, then that's real to and that too is what the song becomes. We can all morph it with our perception. I'm just thankful for the few who understand mine.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
Remi- I plan to in the future as this band is slowly being liberated from its dictatorship... But who knows this band is half electronic so we're always one button away from the dark ages.
Dani- Don't really have disagreements.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Remi- I don't put too much stock into the future. Things change to quickly but I do know we'll always be here. For better or for worse I know what this band means to some people and that’s enough for us to keep going. Besides what else would I do. This is what I do. The next Album will be our second full length. I love it more than "Burning Out" and that's what's important. If that were to ever stop there'd be no future anyway...
We have a bunch of shows coming up. Headlining gothfest Montreal August 27th and opening for aesthetic perfection in October for the "American Psycho Tour"
Other than that, we thank all the fans who've been with us this long. Excited to be with you.
