Interview with Giorgia Fumanti
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
I didn’t know I had a voice and my love for music, as a singer, started when I was 16 years old when I discovered my voice when I joined the church choir. Before I discovered my voice I wanted to be a missionary, a social worker or a good lawyer to help children in need.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I love to be in nature and be with my 4 children traveling near the ocean, this influences my heart and my creativity. I also practice yoga and meditation.
How long have you been making music?
30 years since I discovered my gift and my voice.
Where are you based and how did that influence your music?
I was born in Italy but I moved to Canada 20 years ago to start my carrer after signing with EMI in New York. From Canada I traveled and sang in all continents. Canada is a multicultural country that gives me the influence to make a Universal Music that is accepted all over the world.
Tell me about your most memorable shows, if you haven’t played live what is your vision for a live show?
Singing at the Beijing Olympics in front of billions of people with fireworks and on a huge stage was definitely a memorable show or singing with one of the Three Tenors Jose Carreras in Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and at the Hampton Court Festival in the UK.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
I have performed in so many great venues, including large Basilicas and Cathedrals. I enjoyed performing at the Royal Albert Hall in London alongside Michael Bolton.
I would love to sing at the Vatican in Rome.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Tina Turner, but unfortunately she has left us and this dream will never happen. Other artists would include Andra Bocelli, Loreena McKennitt, Enya, Michael Buble.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into making music and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
To respect themselves, to follow their passion, to stay strong, and to respect their unicity. To stay open to always learn but to be true to themselves and not try to please the others. To enjoy and be grateful to be able to do music and not to grow a big ego!
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
Tough question as I have so many! I enjoy singing songs composed by Ennio Morricone and in particular the theme to Once Upon A Time In The West, also known as Your Love. As well as movie themes from other great composers such as John Williams, Vangelis, Henri Mancini, David Foster, But also enjoy singing more classical songs such as Ave Maria, Adagio, Nessun Dorma….Over The Rainbow, When You Wish Upon A Star
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
Your Love by Ennio Morricone, The Prayer, You Raise Me Up, Ave Maria, Caruso, Nessun Dorma.
What is your creative process, and what inspires you to write your music?
Songs with meaningful lyrics, that allow you to dream and “fly” and that permit my voice to travel from a large spectrum of low to high range.
Do you have messages that you like to get across in your music, if so please tell me about them?
Music makes me feel good, music opens my heart and makes me happy. It is my best therapy and I hope that is doing the same to my audience. I pray that my voice can touch and inspire my audience all over the world.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
I just released my 13th album and promoting it at the moment. Performing concerts in various parts of the world. I look forward returning to Asia for performances. With the pandemic, my last Asian trip was in 2019, where I performed in China and Taiwan, as well as in Australia.
