Interview with High Fade
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Calvin - my brother played guitar and showed me some of the music he was listening to, and introduced me to some stuff I hadn’t heard and so I picked up drums to jam with him! There’s nothing else I think I can or could do!
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
At the moment my free time is also spent writing music and practicing drums so not much else. Also listening to music.
How long has your band been together?
The bands been together for 3 years, then I joined September 2022.
Where are you based and how did that influence your music?
We’re based in Edinburgh! I probably heard and watched more live jazz shows than I had before moving there. It definitely influenced my drumming coming from more of a metal background.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
Secret garden party, it was one of our first bigger stages and festivals. Then recently shambala on the chai wallahs stage was special, and my favourite so far.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
Hootananny in Brixton
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Gojira
The Beatles
John Frusciante
Billy Preston
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band?
Say yes to every opportunity someone gives you to play music no matter what it is.
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
Just keep going
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
Dwee Ba Ba since it’s the first tune we wrote and finished when I joined the band, then burnt toast and coffee, and fur coat. Because that is us
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
Burnt toast and coffee, and fur coat!
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
We write together and each of us craft the songs into what they become. Each of us having ideas to bring is the inspiration for the songs.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
Whatever a person wants it to be!
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
Having three of us makes it easier to decide quickly, we’re good at communicating with each other and we need to, cos we basically live together
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
For all of us to keep pushing High Fade and keep doing what we’re doing.
We have an American tour coming up in October! Some shows with The Cat Empire and some headline shows!
And our new tune ‘Fur Coat’ is out now too, check that out!
