INTERVIEW WITH HU$H
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
I started playing music when I was 5 years old, my friends mom had a piano and I used go play all the white keys in the middle. I realized if I played those notes it would sound good almost all the time. I didn’t realize I was just improvising in the key of C but I loved it. My dad used to play his guitar for us when we were kids and eventually I started learning to play when I was 8. Then when I was 12 all the older kids started producing beats and I wanted to be cool like them so I tried it. I loved it so much I got addicted to it and because I had no friends I just kept going. To answer the second part of your question, I don't think that's possible.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I code a lot using nodejs, c++, solidity and a few other languages. I build websites and server infrastructures, mobile apps, vst’s for audio software, web 2.5 and web 3 technologies. I also recently got obsessed with making 3d video and 3d games in Unreal Engine the last few years. I find coding helps me complete my creative projects and just push through to the end, it really just builds that kind of ethic because if you stop coding a project for a month you may not remember anything about the code when you come back. The game and video stuff inspires so much more out of a song, I’ll get ideas for a video game, a music video with crazy 3d graphics, and then build the song with all those ideas in mind… or after the song I’ll lose my mind on an environment in Unreal Engine for the video. There’s one song coming up on the album that was inspired by a meme, I won’t give it away yet but it’s a favorite in my home town. I wrote and recorded the song, in 4 hours it was done. The next day I built a small shooter game in a day for the same song, bringing in 3D objects for the meme. Used some cheats to build the game so quickly and it’s not a complete game, but was enough for a hilarious video.
How long have you been making music?
A long time
Where are you based and how did that influence your music?
I’m based out of Iowa but I moved around a lot as a kid on my own from the age of 15, but Iowa definitely put the rage in it.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
Me and my old group Sub Militia in Vegas did a small west coast tour with Myka 9 from Freestyle Fellowship and A Plus from Hieroglyphics and that was a great experience. I listened to both them forever and it was a trip sharing a stage with them.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
I’ve always wanted to play red rocks, I love Colorado and the acoustics in that venue are insane. I really like playing outdoors in general, I love being in nature.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
All my friends I ever made doing music.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into making music and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Try not to trip out this is going to be crazy.
Of your songs on your upcoming Strange Music LP means the most to you and why?
Damn that’s a hard one they all mean a lot to me, to be honest. There is one I wrote called “god bless” about losing my dad and being back in the house he passed away in, with the memories all there it was a rough one
Which songs are your favorites to perform live and which get requested the most?
People love the Suffering and Let Lost Happens songs a lot, there’s one new one coming out in the album that I’ve been testing in small groups that seems to be a favorite but I’m saving that for the album drop
What is your creative process, and what inspires you to write your music?
Music really helps me get outside myself. Helps me define the feelings that mean something to me. There’s not always a story to it, but I can say that music is really what inspires me to make music. I love music.
Do you have messages that you like to get across in your music? if so please tell me about them.
Finding peace with myself is really my journey in music, I guess I feel like being honest with myself in my songs is the best path to that. I kind of hope, for the people that want it to, that it can inspire honesty inside themselves as well and help them find their own peace in life.
Can you tell us about your recently released new songs and videos, and upcoming Strange Music album release?
Yea we just did three videos, Breakables, Overstay, and Faith Is Lost which are all out on Strange Music’s YouTube channel here https://www.youtube.com/@StrangeMusicInc. What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
