Interview with Hunting Giants
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
If not for music, we would be a filmmaker, a molecular geneticist, a guru, and a radio DJ.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
We love hiking in the back woods, recklessly flying drones, grinding video games, and reading fantastic stories. All of these things creep into both the lyrics, and composition of our music.
How long has your band been around?
We have been around since 2017, we have all been gigging in western Canada since the mid 2000's.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
We are based in Vancouver, Canada. The metal scene here is incredibly supportive of each other and desires success for everyone involved. We feel free to explore with costumes and projectors at our local gigs because of this support.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
Everyone has giants in their lives, something that seems insurmountable to us, but we believe that we can conquer these giants. Or perhaps we are hunting the giants of who we are becoming. Or maybe we are hunting some giant riffs!
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
We played a battle of the bands in 2019 and gave it everything we had. We were playing against some incredibly tight bands and did not think we stood a chance so we packed up our gear into the car behind the gig. To our surprise, we won. They rushed us on stage to accept the award, and at that time, someone broke into our car and stole all of our gear.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
We love playing the Rickshaw in Vancouver. The sound is amazing, the stage is incredible and the projectors work well with our stage performance. We would die to play in front of the pyramids of Egypt.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Opeth, Tool and Rammstein.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Keep practicing. Even if you want to take a break from playing music eventually, keep practicing anyways because you will come back to it with a much higher level of skill.
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
Projects come and go but the lessons we learn and the music will always be there.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
Extinction of our first EP because I wrote it recovering from being bottled at a concert and the lyrics just spilled through and wrote themselves.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
We love playing Too Big To Kill because the crowds get into it and scream, 'Row, Row, Row' with us.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
We have two main songwriters, Brad Trivett on guitar and Corey Wharton on bass. Their methods are totally different as Brad composes music using midi while Corey writes on an acoustic guitar.
Chasing after the next killer riff is what inspires us to write, as well as telling stories that people can engage, and connect with.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
That we can live richer lives if we embrace courage rather than fear.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
We do have creative disagreements at times and we find the best way to get past them is to remember that everyone wants the same thing in the end, to make the music the best it can be. To remember that disagreements happen because we all care so much about them, and that's a good thing.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
We are just about to release our full-length album, Mythos, on September 30th 2022, it is a project we have been working on for the past few years and we are excited to share it with the world. Go to www.huntinggiants.com for more details.
