Interview with Katery G
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Basically, what got me into music was musical theater. When I was like nine years old, I got to watch my first musical. And then two years later, I got the opportunity to act on one so since that moment I was so into music. And also, when I was a little kid, my parents used to play some records of Queen, Pink Floyd, and Yanni all the time, since then I was mesmerized by music.
If I wasn’t into music, I would be doing the same things that I’m doing today, like acting and filmmaking because that’s another way to tell stories and that’s the thing that I like to do the most. Also, maybe I’ll be a psychiatrist or a scientist related to the mind, I love to investigate how the mind works.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I love to write and travel. I have this morning routine where I write my dreams and at night, I do something similar with a gratitude journal, so I put all my thoughts in there. I love to create worlds. I love to create stories. One of the things that I enjoy the most is to watch documentaries I enjoy learning how the energy, how the people, the mind, and our society works. I am kind of an investigator. I investigate everything. So when I am not traveling I watch documentaries and when I got the opportunity to travel, I love to learn and try new and different things, I enjoy to get to know local people wherever I am and understand them. And I meditate every day. That’s what I do all the time.
How long have you been making music?
I play drums since I was 14 but create music for two years ago when I decided to create music on my own, to compose lyrics, and to tell stories in a different way than filmmaking.
Where are you based and how did that influence your music?
I was born in Mexico City. And actually, live in Mexico City and LA for acting purposes. Being born and raised in Mexico City was a big influence to me because we are very passionate, compassionate, thoughtful, and loving people.
I also got to see and live many contrasts that made me analyze history and discover how some narratives had being spread but other narratives don’t. One of my main goals is to inspire and motivate others to speak up, to empower themselves, and to start questioning their beliefs and where those beliefs come from, and why. I want to invite you to spread the word, if you are able to help to others in something, just help. We are the same, we are everything, we are from the same source. And if you are OK, I am OK too and we evolution together.
I also love how we, Mexicans, approach to death and how we get to appreciate nature. I am touched by the indigenous rituals where the main goal is to be kind to mother nature and the world itself. I’m so thankful to be Mexican!
Tell me about your most memorable shows, if you haven’t played live what is your vision for a live show?
Although I’ve been acting in theater and musical theater before, I haven’t had a show as Katery yet. My vision of it, because all my music concept is Science Fiction and Fantasy, I bet it’s going to blow your mind.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
Actually, I haven’t think about that I think anywhere is going to be incredible and I’m going to enjoy it so much... if you need a name, maybe Coachella.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Oh, my Lord, I would be with Green Day, Twenty One Pilots, Grimes, Tove Lo, FKA twigs, Zedd, and Residente.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into making music and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
I would say focus on your dreams. But this is the main key, step-by-step and just one dream at a time, you need to be laser focus on that one dream, I just get to do that.
Also, if you got this feeling of you’re not enough or “not yet” or you’re an imposter or you are not perfect, I would say to keep on practicing until you are satisfied with who you are BUT very important: Don’t stop on sharing what you are now! Even if you are not feeling comfortable in that moment, you need to start with something that is SO important, start with something it doesn’t mean that that’s the best you’re going to be ever, but you starting.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
In this next album “Undoubtedly Intertwined” I have three songs.
The first is POWER because it’s a social critique about the way we run things in this world and my thought on how we can be better. And the other two are the last ones in the album: THAT NOBLE PART OF ME and PIXEL ART.
What is your creative process, and what inspires you to write your music?
My creative process starts when I get an idea of a story. So that’s how I wrote this album.
I had this idea, this story but I wanted to tell this idea in different chapters so each chapter was going to be a song. Then I create the characters and the storyline, my main process is like a screenplay or like a book so I wrote the story and then I translated it into songs, so I tell the story, and I tell how the characters feeling in each chapter.
My inspiration comes from all the things that I’ve seen and experienced while navigating through the world. I like to talk about life itself the way we think life is and how we create it. The purpose of life. The way this society runs things, and how we agree to do those things, even if we don’t do anything when things happen. I love to talk about profound and deep topics. So that’s my inspiration. Also, I’m a Scorpio, so I am mysterious, deep and I love the things that are hidden from us.
Do you have messages that you like to get across in your music, if so please tell me about them?
I wrote this story because I believe this is a way of describing how I see the world and how one of the solutions that I see, to live in harmony, is to be more empathetic and understand that we are the same, we are exactly the same being, only expressed in different consciences, with different perspectives.
This path will teach us more about empathy, forgiveness and compassion of humanity by understand that we are a mirror of each other. That is what evolution is about.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
The whole album is about to be release this year. The album has eight songs and I am really excited to share it. And also because of music videos are going to be amazing!!
