Interview with Ondfodt
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Music has been part of my life since the day I was born. My mother introduced me to music very early on, we always had instruments at home and I got my first drum kit on my 13th birthday.
If I didn't have music I would probably have worked with video production or anything to do with cameras.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I listen a lot to podcasts and play video games. But I also write lyrics from time to time. Inspiration can come to me from almost everything. When I write music I always try to recreate a feeling that I have in me.
How long has your band been around?
We started back in April 2013 and have since then released one EP and 3 full-lengths. And in May our 4th album is being released by Black Lion Records.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
We are Swedish speaking black metal band from Finland and I have heard that people hear that we sound very "finnish" when they listen to our music.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
Ondfødt was a name I had in mind a long time ago that I wanted to use if I ever would start a black metal band. The band name means that you are born evil, not like you are a full-born psychopath that will murder everyone around you but more like you have dark visions and dark minded in general.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
With Ondfødt we only played two shows back in 2014 and had our "Live come back" in December 2022 which was insanely good. We made a "Live DVD" that was released on youtube. That was our most fun gig for us so far.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
Because we haven't played much yet I can't tell which is our favorite but we are looking forward to playing a lot from now on.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
I would love to play a show together with "...And Oceans" someday. They are good friends of mine, we are from the same city and know each other well. And their singer is also a session bassist in Ondfodt.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
To be realistic, practice a lot. There are no shortcuts to playing well as a band. If you can push yourself to practice and practice you will sound much better. Don't be afraid to write bad songs either because you can just trash them and make another one til it is good. To become good at something you need to fail a lot first.
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
The same as I wrote above. Don't be afraid to fail, as long as you know how to learn from it and do something different til what you do works.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
When I wrote the song "Norden" from the album "Norden" I got chills in my stomach. Still gets it every time we play it. The lyrics represent the band as well.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
We really like to play "No Ere Jo Satan" from our second album and "Tvetalan" from our upcoming album. We haven't had so many gigs yet so I have no idea what our fans would like to hear, we will find out soon.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
When we write music it starts with me making demos and after that together with our drummer Tommi Tuhkala and our other guitarist Joel Notkonen we sit down and start to talk and try stuff and eventually we come up with a great outcome.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
Stories from the area we come from. Dark history from here or the end of the world is also interesting to write about.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
Right now we don't have any disagreements which are good. But we have had in the past like most of the bands.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
We are looking forward to future gigs now when we are back in the live scene. We are also very excited about our upcoming album "Det Österbottniska Mörkret"
