Interview with PIRANHA
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
From a young age we listened to and loved metal music. And when we realized that we liked playing metal more than anything, then it was the defining moment for each of us to grab the musical instrument we liked and make the band. We can't imagine doing anything other than music.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
We like to have a good time with our friends and families and this gives us the peace of mind to be creative
How long has your band been around?
We were formed in 1987. We are one of the oldest metal bands in Greece and we have played death/thrash until 2001(dissolution). The band during its 14-year participation in the Greek metal scene received great reviews from the music press around the world - but also managed to play together with many Greek bands such as SEPTIC FLESH, ACID DEATH, NIGHTFALL, FLAMES, DEATH COURIER and also with major international names such as DESTRUCTION and MALEVOLENT CREATION. In the end of 2017, we are back after 16 years of silence with a multi-year record deal with 7hard. Our new album “Arise from the Shadows” released worldwide on August 14 (2020) and it is our most aggressive release ever.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
We are from Athens, Greece. The Greek metal scene is now recognized worldwide with awesome bands in all genres of metal such as Rotting Christ, Septic Flesh, Suicidal Angels, Acid Death, Nightfall etc.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
We took our name from the well-known carnivorous fish, (piranha) because we believe it represents the style of our music… fast, aggressive and deadly!!!!
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
We believe that one of the highlights of our career was when we played together with our idols the mighty Destruction and the masters of death metal Malevolent Creation!!!!
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
Our favorite venue to play at is Gagarin205 (big live music space in Athens), we’d love to play in Wacken Open Air and Hellfest if possible, because we think it's a milestone for any metal musician to be part of these two huge festivals
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
If it were possible, we would like to cooperate with Arch Enemy and Amon Amarth
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Our advice for new young musicians who want to enter the very demanding world of music is that they have to work hard on their songs and pay a lot of attention to their sound because the competition is very high
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
If we go back in time, the advice I would give us would be to be more careful with record companies and contracts
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
This is «The Εxorcist» (from our first demo in 1988) because it's the first song we wrote and it reminds me of the beginning of Piranha.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
Well, I think are the Rotten Mind, Worlds Grave and Unholy Lie.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
We don't have a specific style, we just write what interests us, eg Nuclear Disease refers to a nuclear war that decimates humanity, Eternal Night is a horror story, Rotten Mind is a journey into the mind of a serial killer, Dead Boat is an epic piece describing a warrior's journey of no return, Haze is a typically Faustian one-man story
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
The message we want to get across is that we want to emphasize that the world is not created by angels and we have to fight every day to survive !!!!!!
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
We are very lucky because in all these years that we have existed we have never had any disagreement.... we’re what they say «one mind one band»
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Our priority for now is the concerts and the promotion of our cd “Arise from the Shadows”, as well as a new music video for our track “Eternal Night”.
