Interview with Red Roll
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
I don’t know, I have always been playing since I can remember…music always been a part of my life. I can’t imagine my life without music!
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I like snowboarding.. It makes me feel free! I like mountains in winter, the silence of the snow! It’s a big inspiration for me!
How long has music been your career?
For almost 10 years!
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
We are from Italy. We live in a small village close to Bologna.
Our musical influences come from the “Rock world”, but each of us have different inclinations. Grunge, Metal, punk rock and rock… this is our world! We love bands like Biffy Clyro, Foo Fighters, Alter Bridge, Muse etc…
Tell me about the best and worst shows you have played.
Let's start from the worst: we were touring in Croatia... we arrived at the venue and nobody was there! The club was closed!
The best: in august we played in Bucharest, opening act for James Arthur. In front of almost 15.000 people. It was a super experience with an awesome audience!
Tell me about your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
I don't know! Our main goal is to be able to play! In every kind of situation. It doesn't matter the location!
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Foo Fighters, Muse, Biffy Clyro and Red Roll ;)
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into music?
Playing in a band, trying to live with your music it’s a great way to live, but it is a very difficult way too… full of very difficult moments. It needs a strong passion first of all. Passion moves every single step in this career! I don’t have any strong advice… only be yourself, trying to be yourself and find your way to communicate, out of any rules!
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
One of the upcoming albums: Shrift. Inside this song there is the real reason that makes me sing ....
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
Call Me Mad, one of our first songs. It is our song well known and it always has a strong impact on the audience.
What is the creative process for you, and what inspires you to write your music?
We don’t have one way to create music! Usually we start from an idea: a guitar riff, a vocal line, a text or a suggestion. Then we work a lot together… in the rehearsal room trying to give a structure to the song. For this new album we recorded “at home” all the songs… to be able to listen to it and have a more clear idea… and to work better on it! We work with our producer too, for the arrangements etc…
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
Our songs are mainly about feelings, emotions… They are an introspective journey into the sickest areas of our self!! ahah
Do you ever have disagreements when collaborating and how do you get past them?
Sure! A band is like a family…. We shared a lot of time and strong emotions togheter… very great and very bad moments! We share a stage but bed too… we have long travels on bus ecc… so for sure there are disagreements sometimes but talking and sharing these dreams make every “problem” ….how to say…. A little problem!
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Now we are inside our new album, out september 23 on Universal Music. This is a big work, we've been working on it for almost 2 years and we can't wait for the release! Then we are looking to play it live as much as we can!!!
