Interview with SAN ROMAN
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
I loved music from a very young age, I think that just growing up hearing my dad always playing music in the background had something to do with it - also my grandmother was a ballerina so there was definitely a lot of music surrounding me growing up. I don't know what I would be doing today if not music haha probably something in finance since I was obsessed with my toy cash register when I was a child.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
Videography, I shoot all sorts of different video work in my spare time. Experience shooting other peoples music videos definitely helped me understand how to shoot my own!
How long have you been making music?
Hmm, I guess since I was around 15!
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
I'm from Long Island, NY so growing up there was a big hardcore scene - my first band originated as a hardcore band actually, but it slowly turned more pop punk over time and as I came into my own and started singing more.
Tell me about your most memorable shows, if you haven’t played live what is your vision for a live show?
I haven't played live yet for my solo album but I've had a fair share of experience playing shows in my old bands. One time when I was like 18 or 19 my band had to play a show at a bar that was 21+ and after selling 50 tickets to friends and family we got there to perform and they wouldn't let anyone in because we were all under age lol... my parents allowed us to move the show to my living room! Definitely a memorable show.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
I don't know if I have a favorite venue yet, looking forward to figuring out where that is when I am able to perform live again. I definitely want to perform all across the world, my touring experience is low when it comes to music so I'm looking forward to seeing new places in the future.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Ooo I guess I would say something like... Joan Jett...Foo Fighters...Paramore...Death Cab for Cutie....
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into making music and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
As corny as it sounds, just be who you are... and if you don't know yourself yet keep exploring and experimenting until you figure it out.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
This is unfair!! haha I love all my songs! Especially every song on my upcoming album, I don't really look at the songs as separate... all of them come together to make up a record that means the most to me.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
I'm still working out my live show, so I truly haven't yet sat down and attempted to play through the record yet. I also haven't played a show yet so, not sure what the people will want to hear off the record but looking forward to finding out!
What is your creative process, and what inspires you to write your music?
I write about my life and how I live most of the time. This record is all very personal to my story and growing up so all the songs reflect that.
Do you have messages that you like to get across in your music, if so please tell me about them?
Of course, I mean the record has plenty of songs about growing older, nostalgia, grief, loss, love - I think the songs explain themselves if you listen to the lyrics. Everything is pretty direct.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Just that I plan to release a few more singles from the record prior to releasing it before the end of this year! Maaaybe even a live show if I can bring myself to get over some stage anxiety!
How can your fans best keep up to date with you, any socials you want people to check out?
Instagram would be the best place to follow my musical journey - @alexasanroman & you can find all my music under my project name: SAN ROMAN
