Interview with SEDATE ILLUSION
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
My brother got me into music, I got jealous when he was playing the piano and at the age of six I copied everything that he was playing. So my parents decided to register me for piano lessons as well. If I hadn't got into music I would be an electrical engineer.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I like swimming all-year. It relaxes me and clears my mind, so that’s a very good influence to begin composing again.
How long has your band been around?
The actual band, with full members, was formed in 2013. As a project, it was created in 2004.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
We have our base in Corfu and since this is a chilled place during the non-touristy months it influences our music very positively making us keep an eye out on little details.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
I really liked the word Illusion, but I thought it needed something more, so I found the word Sedate and it turned out that it described exactly the character of the music of the project.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
There was our last show in Corfu where we presented our latest album at the time. It was an amazing atmosphere. Two other more shows were memorable, the one with Black Strat in a very beautiful place outside of Corfu and the other one for philanthropic purposes, in the middle of a park at a small theater called Mon Repos Rena Vlachopoulou.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
My favorite venue to play is Rodon in Athens, but it has been closed since 2005. I would like to play at the Gagarin venue and at the Fuzz Club with Sedate Illusion
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Billie Eilish. She is a very good musician and I would like to watch her live as well.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Write as much music as you can, have a straight mind and be true to yourself first and the same advice to myself as well.
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
To keep doing what I love and never give up or be disappointed.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
“Perfect Harmony” from the “Glass Delusion” album. It has beautiful lyrics and it is very meaningful for me and how I perceive life.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
Mostly the ones that we, as a band, have already composed together. People are asking “Traumatic skies” and “Elephant Creeper”.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
Vangelis Kakarougkas is the main composer and lyricist, also some ideas come from Anastasios Kibizis. They are about everyday life, the struggle of it, people’s feelings and anxieties and so many more subjects! There is a wide range in them!
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
The only one I can think of is that life is too short and when you are searching for a meaning of it, I always say, the meaning of life is to give life meaning. Thus, that’s the message we would like to get across with our music.
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
No, never.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Our latest single song called “Stars” is already out on Spotify and on Youtube.
And our latest album called “Sedate Illusion” will be available on multiple platforms on 7 September of 2022.
