Interview with Sleep in Motion!
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Ryan: I’m not sure, I still work full time at the minute looking after young people in residential care so probably just doing that without the fun weekends!
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
Ryan: I’m enjoying drawing again at the moment. It’s quite a nice way to relax while still getting out the ideas.
How long has your band been around? Also, please tell me about the dynamic of the band of what brought you all together.
Ryan: We formed late 2021. When we formed, two of us were apart of another band and we just wanted to play heavier music together really and we to create as much as possible together. When the tours finished we wanted to stay playing and writing. So I guess we just thought of it as a little side project at first that we could have some fun with and try new things together.
Where are you based and how did that influence your music?
Ryan: I’ve actually moved to Devon now but we still say Nottingham as Alex and Lewis both live near the center of town so I travel up for recording and rehearsing.
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
Ryan: I don’t want to name names. Maybe one day we’ll tell the story.
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
Ryan: Rough Trade Nottingham was special when we released our debut EP. There was a lot of love in that room that night. Very special!
What is your favourite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
Ryan: I think being from Nottingham it will always be Rock City. That would be a full circle moment for us.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Ryan: Wow okay, so, I’m gonna go with; Alter Bridge, Avenged Sevenfold, Alice in Chains, Metallica, Nirvana and My Chemical Romance
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Ryan: Take in every moment, you will never get it back. No matter what the gig is play it with everything you’ve got. Trust your gut. Be careful who you trust.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
Ryan: ‘All That You Are’ is a special one for me for a lot of reasons. I gained a lot of clarity writing that song. Also, It was fun to create that song when we recorded it. It was really nice to layer up the song with violins and keys something we had not done yet together so that was a lot of fun!
Which songs are your favourite to play and which get requested the most?
Ryan: ‘Separate’ is one of my live favourites. That’s a real fun one to play.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
Ryan: We rough demo the songs first with MIDI instruments on Logic and send them across in a group together. We’ll each take it and work our parts and then get together and rehearse the track and maybe change the structures together then record a live demo. we’ll take that version to the studio when we want to record and go from there. It can change in the studio a lot though so there’s not really a lineal way we go about it. It’s fun to just see what happens sometimes.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
Ryan: We don’t really have a message in our songs, I like the songs to just speak for themselves. Make the song what it means to you. That’s the beauty of music is once the song is released it’s no longer your song it’s anyone’s. I really love that about releasing music, hearing what people take from listening to the lyrics.
Do you have any new singles, videos, or albums out that you would like to tell me and your fans about?
Ryan: Our new EP ‘Separate’ is out on 27.01.23 on all streaming platforms.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Ryan: We are currently writing and recording our debut album to be released this year. It’s sending great so far and we’re all really proud of what we are writing.
