Interview with The Bind
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
Playing music right out of high school bands and theatre shows started our love of playing and performing. Without music, we would be helping to make the new world with our hands
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity? Outside of our music, life is family. Without our families, we would be adrift
How long has your band been around?
This band has existed in and around 15 years
Where are you based and how did that influence your music?
We come from an old Mill working city known for silverware.........Taunton.
The post-production era of Taunton is a small hard working-class city. Our music is for sure a reflection of that
How did you come up with the name of your band and what does it mean to you?
As much as we like the name, it was picked randomly from a book on the first try.
We had been the core of a looser band, and decided on a new direction. It was the Bind we were in!
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
We have had someone come up and “be Jim Morrison” at a local show! Stealing a microphone for drunken crooning! We've played a big outdoor college fraternity festival being the outsiders was like watching an overrun circus. Our hometown Christmas show!
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
Sadly our favorite venue is no longer. A place that was named the New Wave Cafe.
Of course, being near Boston and Providence we want to play all the larger venues!!
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Going for broke? Zappa and the mothers, Captain Beefheart and the magic band, Blind Melon
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
You don’t have to force it to make it happen. I would tell my younger self that the hard work doesn't mean it’ll happen, have more fun
If you could go back in time and give yourselves advice, what would it be?
Cast a bigger net
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
A song for my wife called “Nothing, really" I can vividly remember writing the words sitting with her
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
A strange tale of being arrested on a full moon called “Friday the 13th" its like hanging onto a tiger tail
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
Our process is to improvise while documenting it, then mine the data. We feel the NEED to write anytime we don’t it “backs up”
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
Music matters, we matter, we make music, we make matter
Do you ever have disagreements in your band, and how do you get past them?
Any real working situation has conflict. We try to resolve most things as they happen. Sometimes a cooler head must prevail
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
We just released “Swells” on SODEH and our finishing up that EP to be able to drop more!
