Interview with The BRKN
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
I got into music from a very young age. I was obsessed with Michael Jackson and Led Zeppelin. Once I taught myself how to play guitar it was set in stone that I'd be nothing else but a musician. If I hadn’t gotten into it I bet I’d be playing soccer somewhere or trying to be some kind of athlete.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
When I’m not playing music I love to go visit coffee shops or bars, basically anything that has a cool creative vibe and cool people. I like being around hustle and bustle and it influences the way I look at the world. A lot of time I come up with my best song ideas when I’m just sitting at a coffee shop deep into my thoughts.
How long has music been your career?
It’s been my whole life since I was about 13 or 14. That’s when I started my first band and wrote my first songs.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
We’re based out of Denver, CO. I don’t think it influenced the music so much seeing as a lot of my inspirations are from the UK or somewhere around there. But I will say the people here have definitely supported our band more than we’ve ever imagined and we’re so thankful.
Tell me about the best and worst shows you have played.
The best show ever has got to be when we headlined here in Denver at a place called Globe Hall. It was the first time we could really see that people loved the music and loved the band. We knew we had something going. The worst I can recall might’ve been when we were first of 4 bands on a tour and went on at doors. Just because no one was there! Lol.
Tell me about your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
My favorite venue we’ve played at was in Asbury Park, New Jersey. It was called The House of Independence and was so rad. We felt like rock stars haha. My dream has always been to play at MSG in New York where Zeppelin made The Song Remains The Same Live
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
I’d say The 1975, The Band Camino, and Neck Deep
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into music?
I’d say just play as much as you can and learn as much as you can on your own. Don’t let anyone tell you “there’s no chance” cause there is.
If you could go back in time and give yourself advice, what would it be?
I’d probably tell myself to start singing sooner.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
They all have a soft spot for me for sure haha but if I had to pick, Lovers always give me goosebumps. Just something about what I was feeling when I wrote those lyrics always stirs up emotion
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
Be Cool definitely gets requested the most! But my favorite to play would either be Marilyn or Fake Love
What is the creative process for you, and what inspires you to write your music?
I get inspired by many different things. Usually when I’m feeling really down about something or have really strong feelings going on that’s when the best stuff comes out. It’s hard to explain but there’s just a mode my heart/mind goes to that opens a valve.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
A lot of it is just letting people know that everybody goes through things big and small. You’re not alone. When in doubt The BRKN’s got your back. Cause we’ve been there too.
Do you ever have disagreements when collaborating and how do you get past them?
100% we have disagreements! It just works because we all trust each other and know that we’re on the same team working towards the same goal. They usually just resolve themselves once we get our feelings out.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
We’re coming up on our first Europe tour that we are beyond stoked about! That’s really the big one for us. We also just started pre pro on a new EP so that should be getting more in the works soon too!
