Interview with Trey Joshua
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
I think it was a combination of a few things. First thing that got me into music was definitely my parents. Some of my fondest memories are times when my dad would sit me down as a kid and play me guitar, or sing in the kitchen as a kid with my mom. I also think my love of literature got me into music as well. The thought of creating a story or portraying a feeling with words always really spoke to me in some weird way. So when I got depressed and I needed a way through it, music was the simple choice. If i wasn't doing music, id probably be in a psych ward somewhere or at some play im damn sure i would be miserable being in.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
When i'm not playing music is usually cuz im either sleeping, or making content for my music in some capacity. My life as of late has really only been about music. It kinda became my whole personality. On the off chance i am not doing music, its usually cuz im at the cottage with friends but even still we have guitars out and our setup up there with us.
How long have you been making music?
I've been singing all my life, but seriously writing for about 5 years and producing for 1.
Where are you based out of and how did that influence your music?
I’m based out of toronto canada. That influenced my music in a bunch of ways. Obviously mainly because I take huuuge inspo from Drake, the weeknd and the Biebs. But also being canadian in music is so cool because we really do have so many amazing artists and bands.
Tell me about your most memorable shows, if you haven’t played live what is your vision for a live show?
My vision for my live shows is me up there with my best friends and a pack of cigarettes just vibing with everyone in the audience.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
My dream is to play at the rogers center and wembley stadium. Which, by the way, will definitely happen at some point not too far away.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
Ideally it would be, me, my friends dawson and landon gamble, justin timberlake, brockhampton, the tragically hip and elton john.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into making music and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Just be a student of music. Listen to as wide a variety of stuff as you possibly can and don't be afraid to experiment.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
probably this one I wrote about a girl who dies from a drug addiction. It's the only one that's ever made my mom cry and that's why i love it.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
I have this bossanova type song called “the difference” and that one get requested all the time from my friends.
What is your creative process, and what inspires you to write your music?
Honestly I think I can be inspired by everything in the right moment. Inspiration is weird cuz you can be doing literally anything and just get shot by it and all the sudden everything means everything and boom, u have something special just like that.
Do you have messages that you like to get across in your music, if so please tell me about them?
I think every song has its own message as opposed to my music as a whole having a certain message. I also feel like I tend to write lyrics that can be adapted to multiple situations. For example I have one about my addiction to porn but if you weren't told so, you'd think it was just a song about a girl.
What are your plans for the future, and do you have anything that you want to spotlight that is coming up?
Im putting together a project that's gonna be about 6 tracks. I think it could be something really special. The working title right now is called “immature themes” but as of right now. just Stream my new single “fine to me” on all platforms
How can your fans best keep up to date with you, any socials you want people to check out?
