Interview with Samuel Oscar
What got you into music, and if you had not gotten into music what would you be doing today?
I got into music when I picked up my first guitar at age 15, ever since then I have been interested in music production, sound engineering and songwriting. Hmmm, If I hadn’t gotten into music I would probably be helping my parents manage their restaurant business back in Iceland.
What do you like to do when you are not playing music and how does that influence your creativity?
I like to cook whilst listening, dancing, singing along to my favourite artists. It’s that feeling that I want my listeners to feel when they listen to my songs.
How long have you been making music?
Ooph, I would say 14 years! Although does apple loops in Garageband count? Probably 13 then.
Where are you based and how did that influence your music?
I am based in London and I guess the “city vibe” really influences my music!
Tell me about your most memorable shows.
My most memorable show was when I performed in a bar after only performing twice in my life. The crowd was magical, singing along and it was just great fun.
What is your favorite venue to play at, and do you have any places you want to play that you have not already?
I haven’t gotten into the live performance scene yet but it’s in the works! So as of yet, there is nowhere I would specifically want to play at, except famous places like O2 arena.
If you could play any show with any lineup, who would be on the ticket?
There are so many but if I had to say, Frank Ocean, Rex Orange County, Ed Sheeran, John Mayer and my friend Charlie Kailum. That’s all I can think of for now.
What is some advice that you would give to someone who is just getting into playing in a band and some advice that you would give to your younger self?
Keep making music and complete the songs no matter what. I had so many good ideas but they got archived because the songs weren’t finished and I don’t remember what the idea was at the time.
Of your songs which one means the most to you and why?
I would say my most popular song is called Leave You. The song is about my friend who went through an abusive relationship before we got to know each other and I wrote this song to remind her that I will always be there for her and support her.
Which songs are your favorite to play and which get requested the most?
I would say “Dance for Us” because the ending is so fun to dance to with the audience. The most requested song is “Leave You” people always want to listen to that one live.
What is the creative process for the band, and what inspires you to write your music?
This might sound strange but I force myself to intentionally make a horrible song, then I properly compose a new song after that. What inspires me is my own experiences in life and the people I experience them with.
What kinds of messages do you like to get across in your music?
When it comes to my music I aim to just share my experiences with the listeners and even some people have told me that they relate to the messages in my songs, which is amazing.
Do you have any new singles, videos, or albums out that you would like to tell me and your fans about?
I have been thinking about releasing an EP, but it might be too early to tell. There is definitely some new and exciting content coming up soon though!
